Firstly in the song “Something in the Orange” Zach Bryan tells his lover that things will be fine by dusk light. Zach acknowledges that things can eat away at one’s bones and drive one’s mind crazy. Then he places his head between his lover’s collar and jaw, he feels no weight at all. Knowing that his lover wont miss him back, Zach has found himself in a dilemma. However, he does miss his lover in the mornings when he sees the sun.
The chorus states “Something in the orange tells me we’re not done.”. Zach references the morning sun, often described as being orange in color. He states something about the orange morning sun tells him they are not finished with each other yet.
In the second verse, Zach Bryan expresses his feelings of vulnerability and confusion. He acknowledges that to his lover, he is just a man, but to him, his lover is all he is. Unsure of which path to take he comes to the conclusion yet again, he has poisoned himself. He repeats the line from the chorus, “Something in the orange tells me you’re never coming home.”
In the third verse, Zach expresses his longing to hear her say that she’s been waiting for him all night. He describes the orange dancing in his lover’s eyes from the lightbulbs. He mentions how her voice only trembles when she tries to speak. Zach reminisces about the time they used to dance and the wood creaked, wishing to go back to that time.
In the fourth verse, Zach repeats the lines from the first verse and chorus, expressing his feelings of vulnerability and confusion once again. He acknowledges that to his lover, he is just a man, but to him, his lover is all he is. He reveals he has again poisoned himself as he contemplates where he is to go now. As a result he repeats the line from the chorus, “Something in the orange tells me you’re never coming home.”
Finally, Zach pleads with his lover not to leave, expressing his hatred for the way the orange touches all things around. He wishes that his lover would turn their headlights around and come back home. The orange sun may be a metaphor for the end of their relationship. Zach is using the orange as a symbol of hope and longing. In conclusion Zach is hopefully that he and his lover will connect once again.
