“Talking to the Moon” by Bruno Mars expresses the longing and sadness in the absence of a loved one. The lyrics paint a picture of someone feeling alone and isolated, who is reaching out to a person far away.

The line “I know you’re somewhere out there, Somewhere far away” sets the tone for the rest of the song. Bruno’s aware the person he cares about isn’t physically present. But that doesn’t stop him from trying to connect with them in whatever way he can.

“I want you back” X2 highlights Bruno’s desire to have someone he cares for back in his life. This is further emphasized by the line “You’re all I had, you’re all I had.” He is expressing that this person was everything to him, and their absence is deeply felt.

The chorus “At night, when the stars light up my room, I sit by myself, Talking to the moon, Trying to get to you” shows Bruno’s desperation to reach the person he cares about. He’s talking to the moon, which is a metaphor for the distance between him and the other person. He’s been trying to reach his loved one through any means possible, even if it seems futile.

The line “Or am I a fool who sits alone talking to the moon?” shows Bruno’s self-doubt and uncertainty. He’s questioning whether he’s foolish for hoping to reconnect with someone he cares about, although it may not be possible.

The final line “I know you’re somewhere out there, Somewhere far away” is a repetition of the first line, and it serves to bring the song full circle. Bruno is still aware the person he cares about is far away, but he’s still trying to reconnect with them. Throughout the song you can feel the sadness and longing that comes with his separation from his loved one. He’s hoping that one day, they will be able to reconnect.
